NICHOLAS COUNTY IS HOME TO ENDLESS OUTDOOR RECREATION.
Summersville Lake State Park is the newest state park in West Virginia. The 177-acre park is perched on the northern shore of the state’s largest and most picturesque lake and will be transformed into a premier outdoor adventure park. You can rent pontoons, canoes, or kayaks from the Summersville Lake Marina, Summersville Lake Retreat, or Lakeside Outfitters for a fun day on the water.
The lake is a scuba diving mecca. It has even been called “The Little Bahamas of the East” by Skin Diver magazine. It has an average summertime visibility of 20 to 45 feet. Plan a visit to Sarge’s Dive Shop to prepare for your underwater adventure.
The tall cliffs that hug Summersville Lake’s shores are popular with sport climbers. In the summer months, you can watch as free climbers scale to the top right from the lake’s waters. In the colder months, the lake is drawn down, and climbers have access to hundreds of routes. Pirate’s Cove is a favorite among climbers and can be accessed all months of the year.
A BEACON IN THE NIGHT
Since 2012, a beacon of safe harbor, the Summersville Lake Lighthouse, located at Summersville Lake Retreat, has overlooked Summersville Lake, and it has the distinction of being the only working lighthouse found anywhere in the Mountain State. It stands 104 feet tall with a total elevation of more than 2,100 feet above sea level and welcomes visitors to climb the 122 steps to the top. Climbers are rewarded all the way up with epic views of the breathtaking lake and the greater Gauley National Recreation Area.
GET A TASTE OF LOCAL FLAVORS
Kirkwood Winery creates more than 30 varieties of wine, some familiar and some experimental, and you can taste them all during one of the winery’s tours. You’ll find fruit wines and mead, ports, and standard reds and whites. The winery even makes unusual vegetable wines—and you’ve got to try the Appalachian Ramp, Dandelion, and Swiss Chard Rhubarb wines. There’s always something interesting happening and, with any luck, you might even catch the venue’s annual September Wine & Music Festival.
