Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum
voted best unique tourist attraction in west virginia in 2021
Also known as the Weston State Hospital, this facility housed some of the state’s mentally ill patients beginning in 1864. It is a grand building—the largest hand-cut stone masonry building in North America—but the overcrowded conditions, deteriorating facility, and changes to the understanding of mental illness and treatment forced its closure in 1994. Now visitors can tour the asylum, learn its history and the stories of the people who found sanctuary there, and even take a ghost tour after sunset.
