In Shepherdstown’s historic district, Dogwood General Store is rooted in something more—a carefully selected inventory delicately placed inside a space humming with care. It’s almost impossible to leave empty-handed. You may find a new kitchen gadget that changes the game, a unique mug of any size, or a special trinket to remember Shepherdstown by. Most important, though, is the feeling you leave with: a feeling of interconnectedness, of being seen.
That feeling, and Dogwood’s energy, is all thanks to owner Mary Ball. In speaking with Ball, it is clear that not only does she craft a “full-circle-mindset,” but she also aims to showcase that with their product selection, too. Everything is ethically and sustainably sourced, ensuring that every product highlights just what Dogwood is.
Ball is quick to tell you that the store is much more than a shop for convenience—it’s a reflection of the community that surrounds it. The locally thrown pottery she carries? Ask her anything about it and find yourself pulled into a story of local interconnectedness. The hands-on toys and crafts are meant for building, offering anyone the chance to log off and reconnect with themselves again. The thoughtful rack of greeting cards does more than offer a “good luck” or a “happy birthday”—it makes you want to send a card to someone, just because. All of these items have you wondering, “How did they know I needed that?” That is the intention and passion that Ball seeks to cultivate.
Plans for Dogwood General Store are limitless, with a vision continuing to blossom. Ball hopes to expand nursery offerings, including soil delivery and gardening tools for the green thumb in your life. She also wants to deepen her support for local farmers by hosting after-hours dinners and selling more locally grown goods. The store’s online shopping platform is in the works as well, so the goodness of Dogwood can be shared no matter where you are.
