Superpowers: Empathy and resilience

Quality Improvement Consultant, Nursing Home Administrator, and Small Business Owner
Ashley Onyewuchi has built a career around caring for others, improving lives, and never being afraid to take on something new. A longtime nursing home administrator, she now works as a health care quality improvement consultant helping organizations strengthen the care they provide to vulnerable populations. Outside of health care, she is also an entrepreneur, owning a day care in Dunbar and a car wash in Kanawha City.
Her passion for long-term care began at an early age. “My grandmother had Alzheimer’s, and I helped take care of her when I was in high school,” Onyewuchi says. “She ended up passing away from it, and that sparked my interest in long-term care.”
Her entrepreneurial drive started early, too. Growing up without much money taught her to be resourceful and determined. “I used to buy things from the thrift store and resell them,” she says. “I’ve always had little side jobs to make ends meet, and that really pushed me to keep working toward more.”
What Onyewuchi values most about her career is the opportunity to make a difference at every stage of life. Through her work in health care and her day care, she has worked with people from childhood through old age. “It’s neat that I can touch the lives of people of different ages,” she says. “That’s what really motivates me, being able to make an impression on people and ultimately give them a better quality of life.”
Her plate may be full, especially as a wife and mother, but Onyewuchi continues to look toward what is next. She hopes to pursue a real estate license and has long dreamed of earning a doctorate in health care administration. “I always have goals.”
