Join the WV Living Book Club—and storyteller Bil Lepp—for our last meeting of the year.

ANOTHER MEETING OF THE WV Living Book Club has come and gone, passing by in a blink of an eye with engaging conversation surrounding our latest read—Making Our Future: Visionary Folklore and Everyday Culture in Appalachia by Emily Hilliard. Readers joined us, books in hand and questions in mind, for an evening of camaraderie and contemplation around the stories we tell and the ways they shape us.
Speaking of telling stories: There’s just one last read for the 2025 season, and it’s sure to be a doozy. On Thursday, November 6, Bil Lepp will join the group to talk about his 2008 novel Halfdollar. A five-time winner of the Vandalia Gathering’s Liars Contest, Lepp sure knows how to spin a tale, and this novel is no exception. Halfdollar, West Virginia, is subject to the shenanigans of Edison Janzen, Skeeter Barth, and Charolais Fester, three ornery and spirited teens trying to navigate life in their small rural town. It’s a coming of age story set deep in the Appalachian Mountains, full of honesty, heart, and lots of humor.
