Mountaineer Country, a place like no other region of this wild and wonderful Mountain State. Geographically situated on the northern border near Pennsylvania, the region is anchored by the buzzing college town of Morgantown—home of the West Virginia University Mountaineers. All things WVU can keep visitors busy any time of the year, including practically any sporting event you can imagine, world-class art and science museums, a rich theater tradition, outdoor spaces both on campus and just a stone’s throw away, and a spirited nightlife atmosphere with plenty of toe-tapping opportunities at live music events both on and off campus.
Beyond Morgantown, several bustling communities are worth exploring—like Fairmont, the county seat of Marion County, situated at the confluence of the Tygart Valley and West Fork rivers. This Italian heritage community is home to Fairmont State University and also Country Club Bakery. The bakery’s claim to fame is the invention of the state’s unofficial food: the pepperoni roll. In fact, Fairmont has dubbed itself the “Pepperoni Roll Capital of the World,” and for this reason and many more, it should definitely land on your north central West Virginia itinerary.
South of Fairmont is the community of Bridgeport, home to one of the top 100 golf courses in the country: the Pete Dye Golf Club. It’s also quickly becoming a kids’ sports destination with its brand-new, multi-million-dollar recreation facilities—The Bridge and the adjacent Bridgeport Sports Complex. As a result, the area has seen a flood of new restaurants and hotels popping up to serve locals and visitors alike.
Clarksburg is located just a few minutes from Bridgeport and serves as the seat of Harrison County. It’s a cultural hub of the region, home to the annual Italian Heritage Festival that’s taken place since 1979 and the West Virginia Black Heritage Festival as well as the Glen Elk Wine, Music, and Arts Festival and so much more. Be sure to explore the area during your stay in Mountaineer Country.
