This Wheeling native reminds us just how far our roots can take us.

One of the most creative spirits fostered by these country roads is folk and bluegrass artist Tim O’Brien. Begun in Wheeling, O’Brien’s musical journey displays the enduring appeal of roots music and the transformative power of tradition. He has picked up multiple instruments throughout his life, most famously his fiddle. Using these tools, he developed a distinctive style that combines exquisite technique with heartfelt expression. He says once he left the state, he realized how it was a part of him and how exploring his roots could transform his musical sound.
O’Brien’s career took off in the 1970s with the formation of the band Hot Rize, which gained acclaim for its new and fresh approach to bluegrass. The band’s blend of traditional sounds with contemporary elements added something significant to the genre. Its success, or what he calls “falling in,” paved the way for him to explore his solo career, where he continued to push the boundaries of folk and bluegrass music. He has won two Grammys, one in 2005 and one in 2014.
A 50-year music career has given O’Brien a unique perspective on how much the industry has changed. Beyond that, it has taught him that music is a way to create common ground. He aims to create music that connects with people and, more importantly, heightens the sense of community in his listeners. O’Brien writes on his blog about his time in the industry, telling his readers about his experiences and aspects of his present life. He continues to be inspired by the classics and to create music that represents the human in all of us. His new album, Cup of Sugar, reminds listeners to respect one another and continue embracing their originality.
O’Brien plans to release a songbook next year. Follow him online to keep up with that and future tour dates. timobrien.net, @timobrienmusic on FB.
