If your focus is drama, then Shepherdstown’s Contemporary American Theater Festival is the place for you this summer.

EVERY JULY, THE CONTEMPORARY AMERICAN THEATER FESTIVAL TRANSFORMS the quiet Potomac River Valley college town of Shepherdstown into a buzzing center for artist and audience activity. The CATF has been an advocate for new plays since 1991, a pioneer fighting to make bold stories and fierce undertones heard. Its productions are almost always world premieres with urgent issues at their heart—strong narratives and unconventional stories that dive deep into societal introspection. These are stories that you won’t see anywhere else.
This year’s festival, July 11 through August 3, will host five world premieres: Happy Fall: A Queer Stunt Spectacular, Magdalene, Kevin Kling: Unraveled, Side Effects May Include …, and Did My Grandfather Kill My Grandfather?
Along with enjoying sharply original performances, audiences can take part in post-show conversations, attend production TalkTheaters, and even get involved in the creative behind-the-scenes activities of the performances. For those who want to make a greater commitment, CATF also offers administrative, stage management, lighting, sound, and wardrobe summer internships. These opportunities are designed to provide practical work experience in a professional theater environment.
Peggy McKowen, CATF’s creative director, often speaks about the festival’s dedication to inclusion and educational outreach. The festival inspires closeness as well as a sense of community. Asked how she would describe CATF in two words, she chose “art” and “community.” These two ideas are deeply intertwined for the organization, continually shaping the experience for both the inspiring artists and the tight-knit, ever-evolving community of attendees.
