IN 1936, MCCORMICK’S FURNITURE WAS BORN in the same spot where it stands today, a stalwart landmark in downtown Logan. With over 20,000 square feet of furniture displays and a building a block long, McCormick’s boasts West Virginia’s largest in-stock inventory ready for delivery.
At 12, current owner David McCormick began working for the family business that his grandfather had started with only a thirdgrade education to his name. “I walked to the store after school, starting out sweeping the warehouse and menial things like that. Laid carpet one summer, delivered furniture on the trucks, worked in sales.” His children, too, worked in the store growing up so they would have a thorough understanding of how the business operates. From top to bottom, there isn’t a single part of the business McCormick isn’t familiar with, which has been a significant advantage over his years running the place, and he credits that to the wisdom of his father. “My dad was the smartest man I ever knew.”
It isn’t only brains that have kept the business going for 87 years, though. Letting the store evolve with the times, investing in high-quality products, and offering competitive prices alongside outstanding customer service have all contributed to the business’s longterm success. McCormick credits his work family, as well, several of whom have worked there for over four decades. “That’s quite a feather in the cap, if you ask me. If they weren’t happy, they wouldn’t be here, but it really and truly feels like a family.”
That feeling extends to McCormick’s customers, too, with the store offering personal touches rarely seen these days. “It’s all inhouse. If you buy it here, you pay it here; we finance it ourselves. We give our customers 18 months to pay with no interest.”
With everything managed directly at the store, McCormick’s is able to give unique benefits to its loyal customer base. “Let’s say you have an account here, and you have sickness in your family. Since we handle all our own accounts, all you’ve got to do is contact us, tell us what the situation is, and we’ll work with you until you can get things straightened out.” With generosity such as this, it’s not hard to see how McCormick’s earned a special spot in the heart of its community.
Like many things in life, though, you may have to see it to believe it. So, the next time you’re in southern West Virginia, give yourself some extra time to spend a few hours in downtown Logan. McCormick’s will be waiting for you.
