It’s showtime at the Brooke Hills Playhouse in Wellsburg.
This summer, you can fall down the rabbit hole to Wonderland, visit a Las Vegas casino, spectate an exciting game of bingo, and more—all from your seat at the Brooke Hills Playhouse in Wellsburg. This otherwise ordinary pre–Civil War barn was converted into a summer stock theater 50 years ago and has been delighting audiences ever since.
“Three West Liberty College students founded the Playhouse in 1972 and began the hard work of restructuring it to fit the needs of a theater,” says Diana Mendel, treasurer of the Brooke County Arts Council, the Playhouse’s parent company. Those students did everything from building the stage and adding seats to installing lighting and sound systems. However, they did not install heat or air conditioning, so make sure your theatergoing attire is appropriate for the weather.
The location of the playhouse is another attraction in itself, according to Mendel. “We are the only community theater I know of that’s located in a park—Brooke Hills Park, to be exact,” she says. “The landscape is beautiful, surrounded by nature. And because it’s a barn, barn swallows return each spring to inhabit our first floor lobby, so we’ve got lots of birds!”
Enjoy the scenic views and witness the magic of live performance for yourself.
