New South Square in Granville adds a restaurant, an event venue, retail, and a bakery.
SINCE I FOUNDED NEW SOUTH MEDIA 15 YEARS AGO, we’ve never seen ourselves as a “typical” media company. Our magazines are more than just publications—they are community-builders. Working in recent years with my husband, Michael Mills, we’ve taken community-building to the next level. In 2020, we bought a 10-warehouse complex on Main Street in Granville that once was home to DeCarlo Discount House, Office Shopper’s Paradise, and Bubba’s Garage, and renamed the area New South Square.
We love our new home in Granville. We are directly across the river from the WVU Coliseum, so our location has all the benefits of being in Morgantown without all the hassles. We are an easy one-mile drive from I-79 off the Westover exit—perfect for our vision for the Square.
That vision includes a unique event space, called The Silo in the Square, that we opened this past summer. It is actually two spaces connected with a silo and surrounded by an outdoor courtyard. We host everything from small weddings to baby showers to Christmas parties.
Adding to the buzz is a restaurant and retail combination called The F.A.R.M.—the letters stand for Food. Arts. Recreation. Market. It’s a fun space that offers grab-and-go prepared foods and retail that showcases art, antiques, West Virginia–made products, locally crafted items, and products about West Virginia. As an extension of WV Living magazine, we are wall-to-wall West Virginia! The restaurant is open for lunch during weekdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, a special brunch menu is offered. You’ll enjoy worldly wieners—elevated hotdogs and sausages made from things like bison, pheasant, elk, and duck—sandwiches, soups, and salads, as well as a rotating menu of items from iconic restaurants from around the state. The F.A.R.M. is a really cool space where we are hoping to make retail more interactive with things like poetry slams, a book club, and a plethora of classes.
Also fronting Main Street is This and That Bakery, a family-operated bakery that has become a staple at North Central West Virginia’s farmers markets and is known for amazing pepperoni rolls, focaccia, cookies, brownies, and colorful macarons. It also offers catering services.
I’m excited for folks to experience what we’ve created at New South Square, and I love that we have helped transform Main Street, because so much of what we do every day is championing communities and small businesses. So come on out and see us!
