SUPERPOWER: Relatability

President, Vandalia Health Network and Vandalia Health PHO Vice President, Managed Care for Vandalia Health System
Michelle Coon was once an entry-level receptionist at an insurance company at a time when she was still unsure what her career would look like, but she slowly worked her way up over the years to her current role on the leadership team at Vandalia Health. “I had wonderful mentors bringing me up, and I really got to learn a lot,” she says.
At Vandalia Health Network, Coon partners with providers and health systems throughout the state to ensure communities have access to affordable, locally delivered care and essential services. “There are countless social factors that influence a person’s health and whether they seek care,” she explains. “What’s remarkable is that we can now measure the impact—when people have the right resources, we see real improvements in their health and well-being.”
Coon notes that, throughout her career, she was often the youngest leader on a team, the only female leader on a team, or both. She still walks into rooms where she’s the only woman at the table. She credits her husband with always encouraging her to make her voice heard, and she strives to set an example for her daughters. “I want my girls to see that a female can be in any role she wants to be in,” Coon says. “She can lead an organization. You need to know that you can do this.”
