Superpower: Compassion for people

CEO, WVSOM Health
As CEO of WVSOM Health—West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine’s on-campus rural health clinic—Mary Page Nemcik centers not only the care of patients, but also that of the health care workers who serve them.
“Clinical care, primary care, is difficult. It’s very difficult, and there are a lot of burdens on providers, and a lot of burnout,” Nemcik says. “We work really hard to try to change that trajectory for the clinicians that practice here. I want this to be a great place for patient care, but I also want this to be a great place to work. A lot of what drives my day-to-day is accomplishing those two goals while intertwining all of it with education—being a center of educational excellence for the medical students and residents who train here.”
Nemcik has always had a knack for bringing people together and working together toward shared goals. To her, that commitment to collaboration is perhaps what led her to the leadership role she has now, even after a career that started not in health care, but in public relations, marketing, and tourism. Here, where she’s landed after years of hard work, she remains motivated to keep looking toward the future. “I am always inspired when people are learning, when our staff are growing and learning new skills to take better care of patients, when our clinicians want to add new services,” she says. “It keeps things fresh, and it keeps us doing a better job in our community for patients.”
