Chicagoan Mary Gainer intended to work overseas after medical school. But her husband-to-be, who had family roots in West Virginia, suggested they practice rural health here. She began her practice in 2010 and hasn’t looked back. “I really love empowering my patients to stay well enough that they don’t need to go to the ER or the hospital,” she says. Gainer maintains a Facebook page for her clinics to provide accurate COVID-19 news. “She’s a caring community doctor who is making a difference in Preston County,” Trellis Smith wrote.
