IN THE FIELD OF INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY, large strides are being taken to bring innovative and effective treatment options to patients suffering from a range of issues. And now Dr. Amy Deipolyi, interventional radiologist at the CAMC Vascular Center of Excellence, is using her skills to bring new methods of health care to the women of West Virginia and surrounding areas.
Interventional radiology is a method of diagnosis and treatment using imaging guidance that makes it possible to consider minimally invasive procedures over major surgery. One such procedure this method allows for is uterine artery embolization, an alternative to the much more advanced and large-scale hysterectomy in the treatment of fibroids—benign growths in the uterus that most commonly affect women of childbearing age. The procedure uses small catheters inside the arteries that are connected to the uterus to introduce fine particles into the arteries, cutting off blood supply to the fibroids. The lack of blood causes the fibroids to gradually shrink over time, relieving patients of common symptoms such as pelvic pain, cramping, and vaginal bleeding. Compared with the major surgery alternatives, the recovery time is minimal.
“I want to offer women options,” Deipolyi says in a CAMC informational video. “I don’t think that every woman should have to undergo a major surgery for this when there’s a minimally invasive option.”
