SUPERPOWER: Seeing patterns

Senior Vice President and Chief Legal Officer, WVU Medicine
Jessica Alsop always loved math, so a career in accounting, and eventually tax law, seemed like a natural fit. But after that wasn’t quite as enjoyable as she’d hoped, she started working in mergers and acquisitions, which is where she truly fell in love with her work and began to thrive.
Now as senior vice president and chief legal officer for WVU Medicine, Alsop manages acquisitions for the health system with her team and ensures existing facilities are running optimally as the system expands. Growth for the sake of growth is not the goal, though—it’s extending more and more resources to West Virginians and helping local hospitals that need a partner to help them out of a tough financial spot. “I am incredibly proud of the acquisitions we have undertaken, and not because that means we grew,” she says. “It’s because I had the opportunity to see the situation on the ground at some of the hospitals that needed a partner and how troubled the situation was, and seeing it thrive now in that community and all the services that are available is just really rewarding.”
Alsop largely credits her success to her ability to see big-picture patterns and connections in a way that allows her to take success in one area and translate it into success in another area—and she also credits the mentors and family members who have empowered her along the way.
