The Wellness Champion
Jennifer Hudson
Development Director, Williamson Health & Wellness Center
Jenny Hudson’s passion is to bring people and resources together to improve wellness and create a healthy, thriving community. Hudson grew up in Georgia, but she fell in love with West Virginia and moved to the state after visiting friends in Williamson in 2008. Now she serves as development director of the Williamson Health & Wellness Center. “There is more to health than just a visit to the doctor’s office,” she says. “We’re striving to care for the whole person.”
According to Hudson, Williamson Health & Wellness Center serves as a community anchor, convening partners behind common goals. “Whether it is heart health or downtown revitalization, there is always something we can agree on,” she says. “It’s important for rural health care systems to use their economic power and resources to invest in their communities.”
Prescription Produce is a prime example of how this model is working in Williamson. It is a way to promote healthy eating habits to prevent chronic disease and related health issues. Under this program, a health clinic gives a patient a prescription for fresh produce, and it can be redeemed at the local farmers market for fruits and vegetables. “When health care dollars support healthy eating, it builds a unique case for disease prevention,” Hudson says. “We’ve got a ways to go, but we are on the right track.”
