It’s not too late to join the club.
For the second quarterly meeting of the WV Living Book Club, we donned our red bandanas and stepped back in time with Taylor Brown and his historical fiction book Rednecks: A Novel. Brown discussed the conception of Rednecks, his research, and the legacy of the Mine Wars with guests attending both in person and virtually. We snacked on coal camp–themed refreshments as the discussion flowed for a night of reflection and community.
We are wrapping up our inaugural year on a strong note with the raw and compelling chronicle Don’t Tell’em You’re Cold: A Memoir of Poverty and Resilience, by West Virginia author Katherine P. Manley, on November 6, 2024. Manley tells her story of growing up in poverty in rural West Virginia. She skillfully weaves the tale with cords of childlike innocence, teenage longing, and adulthood reflection, taking readers through those foundational moments that shape us before we ever know it.
Attendees will have the distinct pleasure of discussing the events of the book with the person who lived them—Manley will join us in person for the night of riveting conversation and connection.
