Harpers Ferry
voted best town for history in west virginia in 2021
West Virginia’s history—and America’s as a whole—is incomplete without mention of Harpers Ferry. It was here in 1859 that abolitionist John Brown led his raid against a federal arsenal, an uprising that served as a catalyst for the Civil War and the eventual freeing of slaves in the South. The downtown historic district preserves what is essentially an intact 19th-century town, and the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park is not to be missed. harpersferrywv.us
