Have you ever wanted to take a long weekend to explore somewhere new but weren’t sure where to start? We’ve got just the plan for your next road trip adventure in serene Hardy County, West Virginia. The Barn Quilt Trail, hosted by the Lost River Educational Foundation, is the perfect way to experience stunning scenery, historic charm, and warm Appalachian hospitality. Follow this itinerary—or mix and match—to make the most of your visit.
FRIDAY: Arrival

Settle in at your cozy inn, cabin, or one of more than 170 vacation rentals available in the county. There’s an option for every budget and style. Stock up on wine, cheese, and other provisions at one of our markets, and maybe grab a couple legendary cinnamon buns from Wardensville Garden Market for tomorrow’s breakfast. Unplug, unwind, and get ready for a weekend of discovery!
SATURDAY: Western Hardy County

Today, set out early on the western leg of the Barn Quilt Trail, following Route 48 toward Moorefield, where you’ll see one of the squares high up on the community college’s wall. As you travel our back roads, you’ll find more hand-painted squares on some of the county’s most interesting barn architecture, as well as some shopping opportunities. Along the way, you’ll take in breathtaking valley views and can even stop at a few Civil War Trail markers.
From Moorefield, head south to see more quilt squares and, on your way back, don’t miss the quilt square and a free tasting at West-Whitehill Winery. For a little side quest, visit South Fork General Store, a hidden old-timey country gem with provisions and crafts—and wi-fi. You can have lunch there, or if it’s closer to dinner, stop in at O’Neill’s in Moorefield. We love their Maryland crab soup, made-toorder entrees, and locally inspired sandwiches!
SUNDAY: Eastern Hardy County

Start your morning with a hearty breakfast at Drifter’s Cafe—we recommend the deluxe toasted Everything Bagel with cheese, egg, avocado, spinach, and tomato, plus a hot latte. Then set off for the eastern portion of the Barn Quilt Trail, winding through the Lost River area. Today offers plenty of side adventures, including a stop at the Lost River Artisans Marketplace or Valley Vintage and Variety. And if you need to stretch your legs, check AllTrails and take a little hike in Lost River State Park or Trout Pond Recreation Area. Pack a picnic to enjoy on the trails or stop in for the zucchini avocado grilled cheese at Lost River Grill.
Before heading back, browse Lost River General Store for antiques, local crafts, and an afternoon ice cream. For a perfect weekend conclusion, make reservations at Mack’s Bingo Kitchen for a masterful menu and exceptional service.
MONDAY: Departure

Stop by and say “hi” to the folks at Lost River Trading Post, and grab a coffee and breakfast frittata while you check out local artists’ work before you head home. We hope your weekend leaves you refreshed and inspired to make a return visit to see even more that Hardy County has to offer.
