Wild and Wonderful Women

In West Virginia, we have always known that strength comes not from the loudness of your voice, but from the depth of your impact. For generations, women across our hills and hollers have been building communities, leading with vision, and lifting others as they climb. Too often, their stories go untold. That is why it matters—deeply—that WV Living celebrates our West Virginia Wonder Women.
These women aren’t waiting for someone to hand them a spotlight—they create their own. They are entrepreneurs breathing new life into small towns, educators sparking curiosity in classrooms, advocates fighting for fairness, and caretakers who hold families and neighborhoods together. Their leadership is not defined by titles, but by the way they choose to show up—again and again—for their people and their place.
When we recognize them publicly, we do more than applaud their accomplishments. We validate the power of resilience, creativity, and courage. We remind young girls growing up in rural corners of our state that they, too, can dream boldly, break barriers, and shape the future. We show women of every age that their work—whether in boardrooms, nonprofits, farms, or kitchens—matters. And we weave a stronger cultural fabric by honoring those who embody what is best about West Virginia: grit, generosity, and an unwavering sense of community.
Celebrating our Wonder Women isn’t just about the honorees. It’s about the ripple effect. When one woman is lifted up, others see themselves reflected in her story. Her courage becomes contagious. Her leadership creates space for new voices. Her triumphs plant seeds of possibility that grow far beyond her immediate circle.
As we look to the future of West Virginia, one thing is certain: The path forward will be shaped by women who refuse to sit quietly on the sidelines. They will innovate, they will nurture, they will persevere, and they will lead—and in doing so, they will transform our state in ways that matter for generations. So let us cheer them on, not just with awards and applause, but with commitment. Let us amplifying their voices, support their work, and ensure that their legacies inspire the next wave of leaders. I hope you can join us on October 29 at 11 a.m. to celebrate West Virginia’s Wonder Women!
Our Wonder Women aren’t the only things we celebrate in this issue. Our story on the West Virginia Breeders Classics, the Mountain State’s own “Breeders’ Cup”—a high-stakes showcase of homegrown champions—will have you sprinting to Charles Town this October. It’s not just a race, it’s a celebration of West Virginia pride and world-class horse power. It’s a must-experience!
And in the spirit of Halloween, we delve into our state’s spooky spots—wild and wonderful places you can wander, where legend has it restless spirits still stir. I invite you to embrace the season of change with stories that will warm your heart and lift your spirit—or introduce you to a few.
Boo-gards,
