Escape to the Greater Summersville Area for a winter getaway to a secluded cabin, an outdoor adventure, or the opportunity to immerse yourself in the arts and cultural scene. No matter what you decide, the mountains of southern West Virginia will deliver.
Go Downtown
Sleep in, and then make your way to downtown Richwood. Start your day with a hot cup of coffee at Rosewood Florists & Coffee House on Main Street. Meander up the street to Bloomfield Richwood, a unique art gallery featuring “contemporary and modern art and objects.” Get a real sense of local lore at Mill Whistle Arts—discover a variety of authentic paintings, prints, photographs, and local handmade items for sale.
For some evening entertainment, head to Summersville to grab a bite, watch a game, or listen to local musicians. Gad Dam Brewing is the perfect spot for some fun. Sip on a beer and warm up by the fire or try your hand at corn hole, foosball, or a board game. Feel like watching a ball game instead? Maloney’s Pub is a popular local sports bar with great game-time food. It also offers live music on many weekends.
Get Out and Play
Winter weather doesn’t mean outdoor activities have to come to a halt in Summersville. Winter climbing opens up a whole new experience for climbers. Summersville Lake is drained every winter, exposing beautiful, sun-drenched cliff lines that are usually submerged. There are amazing routes for beginners, with none of the sweat, bugs, and slippery rock you find in the summer.
Winterplace Ski Resort is the place for downhill fun in southern West Virginia. Just an hour from Summersville, Winterplace is the most accessible ski resort in the southeast. The resort makes snow on all of its 27 trails and has 10 lifts. It’s a great place to learn—Winterplace was voted the No. 1 place to learn to ski or snowboard in the southeast by Blue Ridge Outdoors magazine. It also has West Virginia’s largest snow tubing park, with 14 lanes and two super carpet lifts to take you up for another run.
Hit the Road West
Virginia’s scenic beauty does not fade in the winter months. State Route 39—also known as the Appalachian Waters Scenic Byway—is a beautiful drive through five counties in Virginia and West Virginia. It begins in Summersville and heads eastward to Lexington, Virginia. You’ll see the beauty of nature and the quiet country living that defines the 170-mile corridor.
The Highland Scenic Highway spans 22.5 miles along Route 150 and 20.5 miles along Route 39. As a designated National Scenic Byway, it offers stunning views of the cascading Allegheny Highlands and endless miles of hiking trails and overlooks. One such must-stop excursion along the way: the Falls of Hills Creek, the second-highest waterfall in the state.
