Farming is the lifeblood of Hampshire County.

It represents our respect for the natural, scenic beauty of the area, our appreciation for hard work, and our passion for the earth and its creatures.
Agritourism Thrives
Throughout Hampshire County, you will find farms that have been passed down through generations to new entrepreneurs who are carrying on the traditions of the past forward with modern technology and innovation. Come experience our deep love for the natural resources of our area and engage with the people who continue to foster these lands.
Ever heard of a Farm Crawl? It’s a whole day dedicated to getting out and about, exploring the vibrant farming scene in Hampshire County. You’ll get to witness firsthand the area’s rich farming history, with participating locations offering tours and selling their unique products. It’s an opportunity to learn about the hard work and dedication that go into running a farm. The Hampshire County Farm Crawl happens annually in mid-July.
Uniquely Hampshire
In the heart of Capon Bridge, there’s a quaint, 100-year-old house that once held coffins for Griffin Funeral Home, a four-generation family business. A local couple purchased the building in 2015 and, with other community members, have been renovating it into an arts and music community center called The River House. You can pop by for a hot cup of coffee, a fresh cafe meal, or a glass of beer or wine. Visitors can also stop in to hear a local musician or take a community class.
You’ve never been to a butcher like Farmer’s Daughter Market & Butcher. Not only can you purchase locally sourced farm products, including pork from Quicken Farms, dairy, produce, and dry goods, at this family-owned and -operated shop—you feel smarter and healthier just hanging out there. Stop by Thursday through Saturday and try one of Farmer’s Daughter’s burgers, which has been voted Best Burger in West Virginia by readers of WV Living magazine six years in a row and featured in The Washington Post in 2019.
Get Outdoors
The South Branch Potomac River runs through the Allegheny Mountains of Hampshire County in a narrow, six-mile wooded gorge that is almost inaccessibly steep and bounded by Mill Creek Mountain to the west and Sawmill Ridge to the east. The forested slopes draining into The Trough are dotted with pine, oak, pawpaw, hickory, and other vegetation. Canoers and kayakers relish paddling this gorgeous stretch of class I–II river. Keep an eye out for bald eagles as you explore this steep valley.
If you prefer dry land, hike miles of trails in Hampshire County’s wildlife management areas: Fort Mill Ridge, Short Mountain, Nathaniel Mountain, Edwards Run, and George Washington & Jefferson National Forest. On a docent-led tour of The Nature Conservancy’s Ice Mountain Preserve, you can hike among rare arctic plants or take a moderate climb to a scenic overlook.
