Superpower: Believing in kids before they believe in themselves

Science Teacher, Huff Consolidated Elementary and Middle School
The daughter of a surface miner and a math teacher, Brittany Miller-Baker grew up exploring the Guyandotte River with her family. She fell in love with her husband on the river, and her young son has been by their side on it, too, since before he could hold a fishing rod.
“Everything I do traces back to the water and the people I share it with,” she says. “I’ve spent more mornings than I can count on the Guyandotte River, and that river holds my family’s story. That’s exactly why the orange water breaks my heart every single time I see it.”
The “orange water” also led to classroom inspiration.
A student project in one of Miller-Baker’s middle school science classes recently earned special attention. Her students developed ClearFlow, a water filtration system designed to address water quality issues in southern West Virginia. The project earned recognition as a Samsung Solve for Tomorrow national winner, bringing more than $110,000 in technology and classroom resources to the school.
It’s a fitting outcome for a classroom built around asking questions and solving problems that matter, with students encouraged to stay curious and trust that they’re capable of solving them. “I didn’t get into teaching to hand kids facts. I got into it because middle schoolers still ask ‘why’ out loud, before the world teaches them to keep that question to themselves.”
For Miller-Baker, success isn’t measured by trophies or headlines. It’s whether her students leave Wyoming County believing they have the power to improve it and the confidence to try.
“Students are capable. They just need the tools, the funding, and someone to get out of their way and let them figure it out,” she says. “And I hope they always remember that where you come from is not a limit—it’s a launching point.”
