Raise a pint to the return of a West Virginia classic.
Groans went up across West Virginia when Greenbrier Valley Brewing Co. outside Lewisburg closed in March 2023. One of the earliest and most widely distributed craft breweries in the state, its cryptid-themed Braxxie Blonde had won the palates of committed national-brand drinkers, and its Devil Anse IPA was on its way to “state treasure” status.
But just down the road, the owner of another West Virginia–favorite fermenter, Hawk Knob Appalachian Hard Cider, recognized GVBC’s popularity—and he knew that, locally, the jobs mattered. Josh Bennett bought the brewery in July, rehired the crew, and started brewing again in late summer.
Fans of Hawk Knob ciders know that Bennett places a high priority on quality ingredients and processes, and that carries through to the GVBC reboot. The brewery is also more than doubling its past peak production volume to a planned 10,000 barrels in 2024—nearly 2.5 million pints.
GVBC is ramping up the distribution of its flagship brews: Braxxie Blonde, Bat Boy Black Lager, Wild Trail Pale Ale, Devil Anse IPA, and Mothman Black IPA now, with 36 Parks Pale Ale and Irish Dave’s Maple Bourbon Porter soon to follow. Beyond those, a variety of small-batch surprises are available at the taproom, open Wednesday through Sunday with good eats and frequent live music.
