FOR MORE THAN 40 YEARS, THE SKI BARN has been the trusted outfitter for West Virginia’s winter sports community. From its beginnings as a single shop at Snowshoe, The Ski Barn now welcomes guests at several additional locations: Canaan Valley, Timberline, and Winterplace in West Virginia, as well as Wintergreen in Virginia. The company stands out for delivering expertly curated gear and personalized service that transforms novice visitors into passionate skiers. Director of Operations Whit Carminati, with nearly two decades of experience, attributes The Ski Barn’s growth to a customer-first focus rooted in deep passion for snow sports.
Locally operated and staffed by community members, The Ski Barn is more than a place to rent skis. It’s a hub for snow sports enthusiasts and newcomers alike, welcoming visitors with friendly faces and expert advice. “We aim to turn beginners into lifelong skiers and snowboarders,” Carminati explains. A standout feature is the shop’s dedication to expert fittings, giving customers the opportunity to try a range of equipment and discover what truly suits their skill level and personal preferences. The shop also offers flexible rental packages, including multi-day and seasonal options, so guests can focus on enjoying the slopes without worry.

Since its early days under founder Mike Owens, The Ski Barn has provided quality equipment at accessible prices and, after joining the R&R Sports family in 2007, it has expanded its connections to leading outdoor brands. The shop is dedicated to families, offering a wide selection of gear and apparel for adults and children and providing hands-on guidance to ensure every member is prepared. Expert technicians are available for on-the-spot repairs and custom ski tuning, making sure each guest is ready for the mountain. Shelves are stocked with the latest gear from brands including Atomic, Columbia, Elan, Kelly Hansen, Nordica, Obermeyer, Salomon, Scott, Smith, and Spyder, a collection that’s curated for new styles and tech. In the off-season, bike rentals and summer gear extend the adventure, so guests have year-round access to unique outdoor experiences.

What truly sets The Ski Barn apart is its commitment to enhancing every visitor’s experience. Beyond simply providing equipment, the staff offers insider mountain tips, trail guidance, and a community atmosphere that turns a ski trip into something unforgettable. The shop is the go-to destination for adventurous guests seeking value, connection, and local expertise.
While challenges like unpredictable winters loom, Carminati remains optimistic. “Small business is the backbone of our state,” he says. As The Ski Barn continues to grow, its commitment to service, value, and local connection ensures it will remain a special stop for winter visitors for years to come. skibarn.net, @theskibarn on FB and IG
