Living history
The community of Alderson dates back to 1777. Lying alongside a particularly scenic stretch of the Greenbrier River in Greenbrier and Monroe counties, it retains the small-town serenity of an earlier time. Many historic homes and structures line Alderson’s quiet streets. The restored 1896 C&O Railroad Depot and its small museum can be reached by strolling the picturesque Alderson Memorial Pedestrian Bridge. Across the street from the Old Gulf Station—now home to the Alderson Visitors Center—look for another unique landmark: a roadside sign and statue of Frenchie, The Alderson Lion, the town’s unofficial mascot.
Shop
Alderson is a treasure trove for unique finds. Alderson’s Store dates back to 1887 and is managed by descendants of the town’s founder, Elder John Alderson. The striking Art Deco design, intricate window displays, and array of jewelry, apparel, home decor, art, and books make it a vivid reminder of the department stores of yesteryear. For vintage items, the Corner Store Variety is a furniture, antique, collectibles, and “whatnot shop.” Another architectural gem is the Historic Bank of Alderson, which houses the Alderson Artisans Gallery, a cooperative nonprofit community hub for creatives and supporters.
Eat
Among Alderson’s restaurant offerings, Fruits of Labor cafe and bakery is a nationally certified culinary and agricultural training center that supports adults in recovery from substance abuse disorder and youth in prevention programs. Fruits of Labor also stocks locally made, ethically sourced, vegan Kevbot Chocolates. For a hearty diner meal, try Big Wheel family restaurant.
Explore
With the Greenbrier River in its backyard, Alderson is a big draw for outdoor enthusiasts who like to spend time swimming, paddling, floating, fishing, and camping. Less than 10 miles away is Blue Sulphur Springs Pavilion, where visitors can view the only surviving structure of the Blue Sulphur Springs Resort (see story on page 74).
Celebrate
Every summer, Alderson holds its annual 4th of July Celebration, one of the biggest and grandest in the state. The multi-day event includes festivities such as a Fireman’s Rodeo, a 5K, a car show, a parade, fireworks, and a Rubber Duck Race.
Vintage Shopping
Alderson’s Store was established by the Alderson family in 1887. It has continued to flourish under generations of the same family, maintaining its vintage Art Deco beauty well into the new millennium. A selfdescribed “throwback” to old-fashioned department stores of ages past, Alderson’s is the perfect place to find jewelry, antiques, home decor, locally sourced items, and more. 203 South Monroe Street, Alderson, @aldersonsstore on FB
