Morgantown Adventure Outfitters is making outdoor recreation in Morgantown that much more accessible.
In 2022, the City of Morgantown partnered with West Virginia University to create Morgantown Adventure Outfitters, a rental facility for outdoor recreation gear. The small shop is nestled in a premier spot along both the Caperton rail-trail and the Mon River at the bottom of downtown’s Walnut Street. “The rail-trail touches the building, and the parking lot has a boat ramp. You can come here, park, and adventure,” says Emily Chapman, program support specialist for WVU’s Adventure WV program. With the facility’s proximity to the many shops and restaurants that make up downtown Morgantown, she says, it’s easy to meet up with friends and make a low-stress day of exploring both the natural and man-made beauty the city has to offer.
MAO rents a selection of gear to tourists and locals alike. Adult and youth bikes are available, along with child trailers for the little ones who aren’t quite ready to pedal. If you’re looking to get out on the river but don’t want to load up and transport your own craft, MAO has a selection of kayaks and paddleboards as well. Rentals are by the hour—starting at $12.50 an hour—and include safety equipment such as helmets and life jackets. “We are lessening the barrier of entry to the outdoors by eliminating the burden on time and funds,” Chapman says. She describes the experience as choosing your own adventure and challenge. “The rail-trail and river can be as much or as little as you want, and you’ll still have a great experience.”
The response to MAO has been positive as people continue to discover this new way of exploring some of Morgantown’s best outdoor recreation opportunities, Chapman says. The team is looking forward to a busy summer—and, with bike shuttles up the railtrail and guided paddling excursions on the river, it’s sure to be one.
