Sassafras, Willow, Sycamore, Redbud, and Paw Paw—if you’re a botanist or gardener, you’ll recognize these trees of West Virginia. If you’re searching for a quaint getaway along the Cacapon River, you’ll have your pick of these suites for overnight lodging at Basswood.
The village of Capon Bridge, population 400, is tucked into a valley in the northeastern part of West Virginia, west of Bear Garden Mountain in Hampshire County. One could easily find respite watching the water flow or walking through this quaint town that’s home to a green bridge, local businesses, historic architecture, a public library and museum, and extended families of artists, farmers, and inspiring entrepreneurs.
Connected to downtown is Basswood, a restored home from the 1850s that fell into foreclosure and disrepair. Under the development company Green Bridge Properties, Tim Reese has renovated six vacant Capon Bridge properties. Basswood was purchased in 2021 and opened in 2022, when it was brought back to life to serve as an Airbnb.
“Our goal was to create five unique bed and bath suites and maintain the unique character of the historic structure,” says Reese. As with many renovation projects, the scope of the work expanded as existing conditions were revealed in the demolition process. “We replaced the old roof with a standing seam metal roof, repointed the chimneys, created three new bathrooms, and reconfigured the interior so that three suites are accessed through the front door and two with separate exterior entrances. We designed one suite with a ramp entry and gave each suite its own HVAC controls.” They refinished the hardwood floors, and, outside, enlarged the parking lot and beautified the grounds.
Described as a “quiet and creative getaway,” Basswood features riverside and outdoor seating, a charming gazebo, a gas grill for outdoor barbeques, a firepit, and a glider and rocking chair gracing the front porch. “It’s a great place to read and contemplate,” Reese says.
“Our goal is to attract guests who will relax, enjoy the town and surrounding area, and slow down. So we provide games, books, and puzzles as well as speedy internet.” Suites have flat-screen TVs and Google Assistant clocks as well as kitchenettes with Keurig coffee dispensers, mini-fridges, microwaves, kitchen utensils, and Fiesta Tableware place settings. “One of our outbuildings is decorated with West Virginia wildflowers by 2022 West Virginia Artist of the Year Jenn Lockwood,” Reese says. “It is one of four colorful murals she has painted in our small town.”
Basswood, the property’s name, was inspired by the large Linden tree—a.k.a. basswood—in the front yard. Each of the five tree-named suites has original art, poetry, and West Virginia–themed periodicals. All have private baths, and the only shared spaces are the yard and front porch. A unique numeric code accesses each suite, and all reservations are taken through Airbnb. “We use Airbnb for all bookings, as it allows us to ensure all guests are safe, respectful, and accountable. Suites are available separately or as a block. Single overnight stays are welcome.”
Many dining, shopping, and local attractions are within walking distance from Basswood. Reese notes that guests frequently rave about the Farmer’s Daughter Market & Butcher, known as the home of West Virginia’s best hamburger. Coffee, art, and live music can be enjoyed at The River House, and El Puente Mexican Restaurant and pizza from Anthony’s Jr. are nearby, too. The Fort Edwards Museum is just up the street, and for West Virginia–made products, a visit to the Bent River Trading Company is a must.
“In a world filled with forgettable meals, lodging options, and vanilla, cookie-cutter experiences, a visit to Capon Bridge is a refreshing way to recharge and relax in a town full of smiles, ‘how are yous,’ and easy conversations,” Reese says. “You’ll meet some great folks from all walks of life and leave a bit happier and hopeful.”
When looking to reserve a getaway to Basswood in Capon Bridge, you can find each suite listed individually on the Airbnb website. Rates vary by season, day of the week, and local availability, with mid-week winter rates between $59–$79, plus taxes and a cleaning fee.
