Valley View Cabins Resort and Canaan Valley Spa bring high-quality R & R to Tucker County.

THERE IS NO SHORTAGE of outdoor adventure activities in the Canaan Valley. From three ski resorts to dozens of trails, waterfalls, and overlooks, there are endless places for thrill seekers and nature lovers to find excitement and beauty year-round in this neck of the woods. But while the outdoor opportunities are abundant, Chris Waters realized there was something missing.
Opened in December 2024, Valley View Cabins Resort sought to meet the needs of couples looking for romantic getaways, small families looking to create memories, and retirees looking for places to relax and recharge. Waters, a partner in Valley View, says the area had plenty of five- to sevenbedroom accommodations, but few offerings were available for folks in need of just one or two bedrooms during their stay. With support from his business partner and co-owner, Steve White, the plan was set in motion.

“We wanted to create an elevated look and feel with the modern design, but not lose that country roads charm,” Waters says. The aesthetic is spot-on, with stylish furnishings alongside reclaimed wood finishes, offering a perfect blend of modern and rustic vibes. Each cozy cabin features its own five-person hot tub, a fire pit with complimentary firewood, an indoor gas fireplace, and luxurious bathrooms featuring rain shower heads.
For guests looking to elevate their stay, Canaan Valley Spa & Wellness Center can be found just a few steps away. With everything from facials and pedicures to massage therapy and mineral soaking tubs, spa manager Angie Shockley welcomes tourists and locals alike to indulge at the 8,000-plus-square foot space. “My personal mission is to bring wellness to guests and community members in the Canaan Valley,” Shockley says. The spa also features a yoga studio, infrared saunas, a salt room with halotherapy, and a fitness center.
The building offers beautiful lounge areas that allow guests to enjoy a quick reprieve or a full day of rejuvenation. Shockley can create unique and memorable experiences ranging from self-paced personal retreats to wedding parties or corporate workshops, either within the luxurious spa atmosphere or incorporating outdoor recreational opportunities as well.

“It all adds up to help us create a worldclass, destination-oriented space for our resort,” Waters says. “The resort and the spa give people who’ve been coming to the valley for years something new to do. A lot of families come here to go skiing, but say, for instance, Mom and Grandma don’t ski. This gives them a great opportunity to come and enjoy their time here, too.”
THE INSIDE SCOOP

Refresh & Recover

“Our infrared sauna is a dry sauna. You get the same benefits as a steam sauna, but it’s 20 to 30 degrees less hot. We have infrared light and chromo-lights made up of different light colors, with each having a unique health and wellness benefit.”
A Little Bubbly
“The mineral soaks are not something you can get anywhere near here. You’re in a tub with champagne-like bubbles, jets, and minerals from the Dead Sea. You can add aromatherapy, too. It’s an incredible experience.”
The Perfect Complement
“We’ve built the spa services around the mineral soak. It’s really the highlight of the spa, with 30-, 50- and 90-minute options in the beautiful tub. The soaks can be tailored to treat skin issues, respiratory issues, relaxation, sore muscles, or arthritis.”

Waters considers Valley View’s location “the center of adventure,” with the resort serving as a home base for staying in or venturing out. The cabins are less than a mile from Timberline Mountain and roughly 4 miles from both Canaan Valley Ski Resort and White Grass Ski Touring Center. Two state parks are right in its backyard, with Canaan Valley Resort State Park less than five minutes away and Blackwater Falls State Park only about 15 minutes away. In less than a half hour, adventure seekers can travel to Seneca Rocks and Dolly Sods. And within an hour’s drive, travelers can also check out Bear Rocks and Spruce Knob.
During its first year of business, Valley View has received positive reviews across the board. Guests note the details that make the space special—like water bottles at the ready in the fridge, a wide range of cooking supplies, fully equipped coffee makers, and Valley View Cabins Resort–branded mugs to enjoy a hot cup of coffee or cocoa. “The small details make up the whole experience,” Waters says.

As a lifelong West Virginian who loves to travel, Waters wanted to support the tourism industry in his home state. After being in commercial real estate for a decade, he saw this project as the perfect opportunity to bring a new experience to a region especially near to his heart, as he and his wife were married at Bear Rocks, a nature preserve in nearby Dolly Sods. He says the beauty of Tucker County has kept him coming back for roughly 30 years, and now he hopes Valley View will inspire others to do the same. 108 Idleman Run Road, Davis; valleyviewcabinresort.com, @valleyviewcabinresort on FB; canaanvalleyspawv.com, @canaanvalleyspa on FB
