For more than 30 years, West Virginia’s Largest Yard Sale has been a summer staple in Upshur, Lewis, and Webster counties, drawing bargain hunters and treasure seekers from near and far. What began as a local effort by the Upshur County Convention and Visitors Bureau to boost tourism has blossomed into a widespread community tradition, with more than 100 individual sales each year. The purpose is simple: to foster community, support local families, and make the region a must-visit destination for visitors and locals alike.

At its core, the yard sale is about more than just scoring deals. It connects people from all backgrounds, offering a window into the region’s culture. Cadence Ringer, executive director of the Upshur County CVB, puts it simply: “The biggest thing that’s unique about it is that it’s a huge collaboration. It’s not just one person running the event—it’s entire communities.”

For many local families, the event falls at just the right time, providing a way to prepare for the upcoming school year. Parents can pick up clothes for their kids, while sellers appreciate the opportunity to declutter and make a bit of extra money. With so many sales concentrated into one weekend, the thrill of the hunt is a major draw for those who come to explore.

An interactive map becomes available in June to help attendees navigate the multitude of sales and plan their adventures. The yard sale is not just about finding deals—it’s also an opportunity to explore different towns, interact with residents, and experience the hospitality that defines this part of West Virginia.
