Variety at the V Club

Variety at the V Club

The V Club: where everybody knows your name. That may be because Huntington is a small city, but then, those who frequent the V Club are like a tight-knit family, having supported the live music spot since it opened in 2006. The club on the corner of 6th Avenue and 8th Street has quickly become a well-established music venue in the Tri-State. When a big indie name comes to town, no matter the genre, you can bet they’ll be playing at the V Club. Nationally touring acts such as The Avett Brothers, Unknown Hinson, Electric Six, Hank 3, Clutch, and many more have all performed at the small venue. The club is also known as a great place for local bands, and if you want to explore Huntington’s local scene, this is the place to do so. The V Club has something different...

Bud Carroll: A Musical Force

10/28/11

Bud Carroll: A Musical Force

Best known for his work with WV-based southern rock band American Minor, Bud Carroll and the Southern Souls, and indie/powerpop band AC30, Huntington resident Bud Carroll plays guitar, drums, bass, piano, cello, and, well, even more instruments. Lately, though, he says, “I mainly consider myself a songwriter.”   Bud is finishing up a solo record titled At Least I Can Still Smoke in My Car, and he plays guitar on the AC30 self-titled album out now. He also records his own music and runs a residential recording studio in Barboursville called Trackside. Looking to distance himself from the southern rock sound he became known for with American Minor, Bud explores influences across several genres in his current songwriting. “I like to keep the...

Billy Matheny: Songwriter, sideman

Billy Matheny: Songwriter, sideman

Billy Matheny is quick to joke when asked how one would label Southeast Engine, the Misra Records act that has been his main project since 2009. “Grindcore,” he laughs. “No one ever wants to throw themselves into a camp,” Billy says. “Everybody wants to feel what they’re doing, is like, ‘so unique.’ I’ve just gotten to a point where I tell people we play folk rock.” See Billy on banjo, below. Though Billy’s involvement with the nationally touring band only goes back a few years, he’s been a force in West Virginia music for much longer, whether through his “sideman” presence with artists like Todd Burge and the Morgantown-staple Moon—now The Phantom Six—or even in his own...

The fourth West Virginia Music Hall of Fame inductions will be held on Saturday, October 15, at 7:30 p.m. in Charleston’s Culture Center Theater. “It’s a full-circle moment, for sure,” Mattea says, reminiscing about past induction ceremonies, where she helped to honor West Virginian musicians Billy Edd Wheeler, Bill Withers, and the late Hazel Dickens. “I am humbled to be in their company.” Jimi Hendrix bassist Billy Cox and jazz drummer Butch...

Ponce De’Leioun

09/21/11

Ponce De’Leioun

It ain’t easy trying to make it as a rapper—especially when you live in West Virginia. California-born, West Virginia-raised rapper Ponce De’Leioun has worked hard for every bit of success he’s had during his budding career. On top of his writing, rapping, and producing duties, the 21-year-old has become a marketing whiz and promoter to create buzz around his name. Ponce is convinced his hard work will pay off. His latest mix-tape, “The Lion’s Den,” combines slick remixes of popular songs by Drake, Lil Wayne, and Rick Ross. It’s hard to improve on tracks laid down by hip-hop powerhouses, but Ponce does it with breath to spare. The young rapper brings crisp lyrics and a healthy amount of swagger to the rap game, making...
